Chapter 24

The rebuke of the Green Man was a great wake-up call for me. I left the leafy area immediately, ready to take action. He was right. I was not a passerby without power, wishing that someone would do something about these murderers. I was a wizard! And by the Goddess, these people could not get away with their crimes.

But how could these crimes be punished? I was not about to kill a bunch of priests for their deeds. Not unless it was out of self-defense, of course. No, the proper punishment was for them to be seen before the people for what they did, and judged by a court.

I pondered this for a time and decided that the best way would be to bring them to a higher authority than I. Even if the court ruled their actions were legal due to the ground they stood on, the entire world would hear of the Justicar’s cruelty and lack of mercy. If there was one thing that nobles were good at, it was spreading gossip at the speed of sound. A court hearing a scandal this juicy would undoubtedly destroy this organization’s legitimacy, or at the very least, force them to abandon their course of killing other denominations.

I prepared a new spell that I had been thinking about for some time now. Hopefully it would work on my test subject, though she knew not that she was a volunteer. Sound! Other! Far! Only! My fingers flew through the air, chaining three glyphs together in a graceful display. I was getting better at remembering the glyphs and faster at moving my hands. Spell Learned: Whisper. Sound Sigil has Increased. You gain 1 perk.

“Do you hear my voice?” I asked, feeling my very words leave my mouth, but making no sound. The syllables escaping my lips became pink wisps before vanishing fully.

“Yes, my master,” Alisha replied. “Do you hear mine?”

Glee filled me, both at having a successful spell but also at being called master. I was not an egotistical man, but…I’ll be damned if it didn’t feel special to be called the boss for once. After years of saying yes sir to everyone in the world, I was finally the one called sir.

“I do, listen. You are to go forth to Highlen or until you meet a patrol,” I said. “Inform them of the massacre. If they will not listen, rally up a posse but bring a law keeper with you. Return here.”

“You mean to have the Justicars arrested?” Alisha asked with a laugh. I could not see her expression from wherever she was, but I knew it was one of skepticism. “Their crimes are many but the land is neutral, owned by the church, not the Lady Highlen. They cannot be arrested easily.”

“In truth, I mean to order these priests to surrender themselves willingly and confess,” I said. “And I expect once half of them are dead, they will do as I demand.”

“If I may be so bold, Master?” she said. I grimaced a little at that title now.
