CHAPTER 10

“I see you keep looking at that helm boy,” Tanner said. “You want it like an ugly poor man wants a rich pretty girl. Nothing you can do with it right now, you need one of those mages changed by the hammer to make everything work.”

“It is just calling to me for some reason,” Prince Tanner said.

“Me as well,” Daphne said. “I know this is selfish but I am curious to know all I can about a person. Not just you but everyone, to know their hopes, their dreams, even their personality.”

“It is like a drug,” Tanner said. “I admit that. Knowing all there is to know about someone is better than any book or play you have ever read. Some of it will disgust you, some depraved people have had on my helm and it makes me sick to my stomach for everything I have seen and witnessed. When I first came back I made everyone who was trying to cozy up to me try the thing on. It was a good way to get rid of spies, busy bodies and those who love telling gossip. I got rid of a bunch of people Stephen loved, it was heartbreaking to do it to him but it had to be done. I am sure most of them didn't even realize what was going on, I didn't explain myself and made that a rule for anyone in my business. I quit that eventually, I got Farald and that old cuss is a good judge of character. I know you all are going to want to do the same. Countless helms will be made just like what Darlene is doing. You are going to read someone and then destroy it so your own secrets can be kept. One thing doing it to workers though, slippery slope to do it to a friend.”

“I just don't understand why you would give us this,” Daphne said. “I think it is more trouble than it is worth.”

“Not for me,” Tanner replied. “I don't walk in any shadows. What you see with me is what you get. Only one thing in there I wish would stay secret.”

“Now you really have me intrigued,” Prince Tanner said.

“Your Aunt Mary’s grave,” Tanner said. “People who didn't love her in life shouldn't grieve over her in death. It is time though for your Nan to know where her little girl is laid down at. Amelia deserves that much.”

“I think I would like to visit it myself,” Prince Tanner said.

“Well enough of waffling on with you two,” Tanner said. “Let me enjoy this baby before you take her again.”

“I think she likes you,” Daphne said.

“Aye,” Tanner said. “Nothing like holding a babe to right the world. So innocent and trusting, it is humbling to have someone put all of their trust in you. If I am still around when she takes the throne, you can both rest easy that she will have at least one supporter no matter who she marries.”

“I look older than you at this point uncle,” Prince Tanner said.
