Amir woke up feeling better than he had in a long time. Soraya had spent the night in his bed. Even though there had been no love-making, it had felt so good to lie there in her arms. He pulled her closer and kissed her head.

“I like waking up to you,” he said.

“Me too,” Soraya said. She smiled, rubbed his chest, and then sat up and swung her legs over the edge of the bed.

“Where are you going?” Amir asked, grabbing for her hand so he could pull her back into bed. She laughed and tugged free.

“I need to go back to my room. I need to shower,” Soraya replied.

“Shower here.”

Soraya turned to look at him. She had a frown on her face. “I don't have my stuff here,” she said.

“Use mine.” He winked at her. She pushed him playfully and jumped out of bed. She headed for the door and left the room. Amir sulked for a minute, hoping she would come back. Eventually, he roused himself. He couldn’t avoid the firing squad of his family forever.

Breakfast was frosty. Amir’s parents were not present. Everyone else was there, eating silently. There were some light conversations, but everyone avoided the elephant in the room, although it was clearly dominating everyone’s thoughts.

Suddenly, Sara was not feeling well. She touched her stomach. Tariq held her hand and asked if she was feeling all right.

“Just morning sickness, I guess. Excuse me,” she replied. She stood up and started for the nearest bathroom. She didn’t make it past the door before she collapsed. Tariq rose in a flash and ran to her. He gathered her in his arms.

“Amir, pull up the car. We’re going to the hospital.”
