Rashida awoke early the next morning to the sounds of movement in the suite. Blinking her eyes open, she spotted Salah’s silhouette near the end of the bed, the only illumination coming from the partially open door to the bathroom. From what she could tell from the outline of a suitcase in front of him, he was packing.

Still groggy and confused, she yawned, trying to get her sleepy brain to kick into gear. “What’s going on? Are we going somewhere?”

Salah stilled in the middle of folding what looked like a shirt, then said, “No. You’re staying here. I’m going to Vegas, remember?”

“Vegas?” She scowled, trying to remember their schedule of royal engagements, but it was still too early for clear thinking on her part. She hadn’t even had her tea yet. With a sigh, she plopped back down on her pillow as his mention of it a few days ago slowly came into focus. “Right. Okay. Sorry. Pregnancy brain strikes again.”

He laughed, a low sexy sound that made her toes curl beneath the duvet. “I would have canceled, but I was booked to host this party months ago, before our wedding, and it’s for a charity. I’d feel guilty pulling out at the last minute. And, well, they think it’s for my birthday.” He smiled, his teeth white in the pre-dawn gloom. “Don’t worry, though. I’ll be back in a couple days, I promise.”

“Birthday?” She rubbed her eyes, even more confused now. “But it’s not November ninth.”

“True.” Salah left his suitcase at the end of the bed and came around to sit beside her, reaching down to push the hair from her eyes then cup her cheek. “Leave it to you to remember the correct date.”

“Of course I remember. Also, it was on the paperwork we signed after the wedding, so…”

“Ha!” Salah bent down and kissed her fast before returning to his packing. “And here I thought you cared for me so much you had the date engraved on your heart.”

The whole wedding paperwork thing hadn’t been a lie. She had seen the date of his birth there, but honestly, she’d remembered all on her own. She remembered most everything about Salah because he was important to her, even before she’d been his wife. Her chest constricted slightly with emotions she really didn’t want to think about that early in the morning, so she covered with more teasing.

“So why do these people think it’s your birthday? Have you upgraded from a single day to entire month of celebrations?”

He snorted. “Hardly. Parties are kind of my job—I add an international flair and a bit of class and celebrity to someone’s event in exchange for hefty donations to charities. They often want to time it with my birthday, since I’m the guest of honor. No one should have to work on their actual birthday, so my secretary and I came up with a list of alternative dates to throw people off yet still allow them to celebrate.”

Huh. Rashida lay there a moment
