Chapter Twenty-Six
Ophelia
My knock was subtle, but I knew heâd be expecting it. Just as I knew heâd be standing on the balcony off his bedroom, glass of dark liquor in hand. It was always like this with usâthe predictability. The moving in tandem. The understanding.
âI figured youâd find me when you were ready.â Tol didnât look at me when he spoke, and I was afraid to face what I would find in his eyes if he had. The setting sun gilded his frame like my own personal Angel.
I crossed the tidy bedroom, notebooks stacked on every surface, and joined him on the balcony. My fingers were twitching. Absently, I traced circles along the stone.
âIf I donât start talking, youâll likely wear a hole in the railing,â he joked flatly. âSorry, I donât have anything to offer for knots.â
Stifling the tension within me, I reached over, lifting his glass from his hands and taking a long sip. I didnât recognize the liquor, slightly spicy with a hint of orange. It was how I imagined Tolek tasted.
Passing the drink back to him, I folded my hands to stop their fidgeting.
âIâd rather talk,â I said.
âAnd what is it youâd like to discuss, Alabath?â He slid the glass between his hands, not looking at me. I couldnât remember a time before the Undertaking when Tol had avoided me. That he did so now made my chest feel like it was going to cave in.
âIâve already spoken to Malakai.â His shoulders tensed. âWhat was that, Tolek?â
He took a long sip of his drink, sucking his lips between his teeth, pursing them as he swallowed. âIâm not sure what you mean. He seemed to have an issue with me.â
Who had the issue was irrelevant. Why it had startedâthat had my heart thumping against my ribs.
I cleared my throat. âAnd was that issue for good cause?â Even to my ears, it sounded like an accusation. His chin dropped, and I quickly corrected myself. âWhat I mean to say is, is it true? Because whether or not it is, his grievances donât justify his actions.â
âIs that what you truly think?â
âI think itâs none of his business,â I confessed, taking a deep breath. âBut it is mine. Was he right?â
Slowly, Tol turned his eyes on me, and the look in them was unlike anything Iâd ever seen before. It was deeper, a bottomless hole of emotion that I was on the precipice of falling into. Tol showed more of himself to me than he did to others, shared sides of that scarred soul that he didnât dare expose elsewhere, but this was more.
âAnd what does it matter if he is?â
My stomach swooped, my heart with it, because that was as good as a confession.
âHow long?â I whispered.
âSince the day I first saw you fight.â He ducked his head. Bashfulâan emotion I never thought Iâd see on him. âNot the play things we did as children, but the first summer we really trained, when we were thirteen. The fire in you, the inability to back down, and the utter glow about you when you did what you were born to do.
