14. This paragraph was emended at different times, and it is not perfectly clear what was intended. The first change was the addition, after lest they fell beneath the wrath of the Cods, of: And he bade farewell to all whom he loved upon the last shore, and was taken from them forever. Subsequently nor any of his small company seems to have been removed, with the result: and he would nor suffer Elwing to go with him, lest she fell beneath the wrath of the Gods: but the previous addition was not struck out.
