âFAE, WAKE UP.â
Her shoulder was being shaken: Fae blinked and opened her eyes. It was dark in her room, and a shadow hovered over her.
âShhh.â It was Mistress Larwood. She lifted her hand from Faeâs shoulder. âSomeoneâs downstairs. Inside the house.â
Fae slipped out of bed and quickly followed Mistress Larwoodâs shadow out into the upstairs hallway. Another shadow, Councilman Larwood, stood at the top of the stairs. He pointed, and his wife nodded and grabbed Faeâs hand, pulling her towards a wall. She pushed against it and a section swung inward, revealing a dark opening.
Fae scanned the house for magic but she didnât find any, so she knew it wasnât Burrage. The sound of creaking wood floated up the stairs, along with soft footfalls.
Mistress Larwood eased through the opening, gesturing to Fae to follow. Stairs went up, not down as sheâd expected. From the outside, the house didnât look as though it went beyond two stories but perhaps there was a secret floor.
She went up three steps and then the path led down a steep, narrow staircase. She held out a hand to steady herself and felt warm stone beneath her palm: the chimney, she guessed.
Magic flared, and she heard a muffled shout of pain. From a few steps below her, Mistress Larwood whimpered.
âA spell,â Fae whispered. âI put a protective spell on each of us. The Councilmanâs has been triggered.â
âIs he safe?â
Fae felt through the magic. She didnât have ties to Larwood, not like with Aric, but the spell had done its job. âFor now,â she said.
Mistress Larwood nodded and took a few hurried steps down. She paused again, and Fae wondered if sheâd heard something else. But then Mistress Larwood fumbled at the wall in front of her and a pale light filtered through an opening. It was almost dawn.
âHead across the lawn and just past the apple tree,â Mistress Larwood whispered. âIf you duck under the blue spruce, thereâs a path that leads next door.â She edged aside so Fae could squeeze past her. âTell the neighbours to round up the watch and send them here.â
âArenât you coming?â Fae asked.
âNo. Iâm going to find my husband. Weâll pretend that you left already. Hopefully that will hold them until the watch can get here.â
âThank you,â Fae replied. She stepped out into the pre-dawn morning, the grass damp with dew under her bare feet. She sprinted across the lawn, ducked under the spruce and . . . something slammed into her head. She felt magic flare and she heard a grunt of pain close by, then she collapsed.
