NINETEEN

After a tense moment, I used my alpha command to force

Ruby to shift during the day despite the lack of moon. Despite the risk, Ares opted to shift and watch over us from above as we followed him to the best path to join his family. I shifted gladly into my wolf form. The magic of the shift helped heal most of my wounds. After briefly touching, Ruby and I were able to communicate in wolf form through our bonds. Her fur, a deep red auburn, allowed her slighter frame to blend well into the surrounding woods.

Ruby, can you hear me? I asked through the bonds. There was nothing but silence through the bond, but she yipped at me. I looked at her. Unlike Mason, she did not bear any marks as a side effect of our bond. She was pack, but she was not my beta. Instead, I felt Aiden through our bond.

Aiden’s relief came rushing through our bond like a flood. A tightness in my chest I hadn’t acknowledged loosened. The tension left my body for the first time since we touched the stones. Then guilt flooded in as I recalled that burning kiss. Ruby yipped at me. She felt the shift in my emotions, even as Aiden responded with his own concern and love.

Mine, the wolf asserted. Mine.

I’m sorry I attacked you for calling me Eves. Only Mason does that. I explained to Ruby. She only huffed as we kept Ares within our sight. The trees were beginning to thin; the soft earth once littered with leaves was becoming harder. There were more and more rocks beneath our paws as the ground sloped upward. Ares was leading us up into the mountains.

We were fully out of the woods now, scrambling across slate and rock. Ares flew low along the cliffside of the mountain to avoid being spotted. Ruby slowed her pace as our path narrowed. It could hardly be called a trail, but the scent of goat and deer confirmed the wildlife used it regularly. An image of a feast flashed through the pack bond with Ruby. My stomach grumbled for a whole other reason.

Hunt? I suggested. Ruby responded with an image of a goat she had seen on the mountainside. A sense of being watched grew strong, even though she and I were alone on the path as far as I could see. The blue skies above were empty except for Ares. There were no predators that could pick us off from the sky, even as the scorching sun beat down on us. Ares circled back to see why we had slowed. His blue scales reflected the light. He looked like he was gilded in silver—a sleek predator, almost silent as he soared and swooped along the mountain currents.

Throughout the white mountainside were clusters of trees, bushes, and boulders we could use as cover, but nothing substantial enough for shelter. Ruby ran ahead, out of sight. She sent an image of a fleeing black goat to me.
