Jerry put down the phone and said, ‘Now it seems like we might be getting somewhere.’

Jamila looked up from her laptop. ‘Who was that?’

‘Jimmy from Wandsworth nick. His search team went back to Kennington station early this morning while the power was still switched off. They found a small blocked-up door that they’d missed before, and there’s a passage behind it that leads through to another one of those abandoned Tube tunnels. The problem is that it’s like a bloody maze down there. He said it’s going to take them a fair amount of time to search through all of them, even with those tunnel engineers giving them a hand.’

‘What about that Simon? Has his train-spotting friend found his map of the Underground yet?’

‘Anorak? No, I haven’t heard from him. I’ll give him a bell and see if he’s had any joy. But according to Jimmy, it’s not just a question of locating the tunnels. Some of them have half collapsed because the brickwork was never completed, so they’re pretty dangerous, and some of them are flooded.’

‘All the same, this cult know their way around.’

‘That’s another problem that Jimmy mentioned. He said they brought in three search dogs from Nine Elms – two Alsatians and a Lab – but none of them picked up a scent. In fact, it was more like they did pick up a scent but they didn’t want to follow it. It was almost as if they were scared to.’

‘Search dogs? Scared? I have never heard of that before.’

‘Me neither. But he said that when they rescued that Edward, one of the dogs went on the attack like he’d never seen a search dog go for anyone. His handler said afterwards that he only got hyper-aggressive like that when he was frightened.’

Jerry picked up his cup of coffee, sipped it, and grimaced, because it had gone stone cold. ‘I don’t know. This whole thing is so weird. How did a whole cult spring up without us even catching a sniff of it? Especially a cult that fucking eats people.’

Jamila sat back. ‘Do you know what I was thinking? That councillor we talked to, he may have given us the answer to that. All the cult members that we have come across so far have been homeless people. And apart from one or two charities, like the Salvation Army and Centrepoint, we ignore homeless people. Perhaps they have found a way now of getting together and fighting back.’

‘Oh, come on! By kidnapping people and cooking them?’

‘Perhaps their god demands it. Perhaps he is like the goddess Kali. When she fought the evil demon Raktabija she wounded him, so that he bled. Every drop of his blood turned into a clone of him before it fell to the ground, but Kali devoured every one of them. How do you defeat your enemies, both spiritually and physically, body and soul? You eat them.’

‘I don’t know,’ said Jerry. ‘I just think it’s gone beyond bonkers. Listen – do you want
