Chapter 3

By the time I reach my destination it’s midmorning. I park up near the ferry terminal at the port of Liverpool and abandon the car. No doubt it’s been reported stolen by now.

On the opposite bank of the river I spot the ferry terminal for Belfast. Further downriver are those that go to Douglas and Dublin. I discount all of them. There is no way Marguerite would use a passenger ferry. Way too risky. Way too likely to end in a bloodbath that would blow their cover.

I stand on the dockside and turn in a slow circle, taking it all in. A cold wind is blowing off the sea and I pull the collar of my coat tighter around my neck. There are people and cars everywhere. It’s like a giant ant’s nest that’s been kicked over.

I’ve never been to the port of Liverpool but that doesn’t matter. I’ve staked out thousands of places like this. Ports make great places to hide things because there are always abandoned areas: old warehouses, storage sheds and the like. I’ve discovered smuggling rings, drugs dens, racketeering scams, you name it, in places like this.

I begin walking, keeping the river Mersey on my left. Out to sea large cargo ships wait their turn to dock at the container terminal. Would Marguerite smuggle Ciaran aboard a container ship? Unlikely. Sure, it’s less conspicuous than a passenger ferry but container ships have tight security and Marguerite would need one headed for Belfast at exactly the right time. Too many variables.

No, they must have their own boat, either hired or brought over from Ireland. With a captive to sneak aboard, they’re unlikely to travel during the day when it’s so busy. They’ll wait until tonight. That means I have a little time. Time to find Ciaran and free him.

The call of seagulls is loud in the air. The smell of diesel wafts into my nostrils. The hum of vehicles, the crank and grind of machinery, the shouts and calls of humans loading ships, it all melds together into a cacophony of sights, sounds, smells.

Where would a nest of vampires hole up in this vast human ant’s nest? It would have to be a quiet place, an abandoned place that’s close to the water.

I walk past the passenger terminals, through the container terminal, ignoring the loading area for the container ships and eventually find myself approaching a cordoned off area that appears to be a construction site. JCB diggers sit on huge piles of sand and racks of tools and heaps of supplies lie dotted about on the site. It’s deserted: closed down for the weekend.

Suddenly a shiver of warning goes down my spine and I spin, hands going to my knives. But there is nothing, just that cold wind blowing in off the ocean. And yet... I sense something. There’s only one thing that makes my hunter’s instincts go haywire.

Vampires.

I must be close even though the site appears utterly deserted. I duck under the ropes surrounding the area and tread carefully around the piles of rubble and refuse.
