Lyra was an inquisitive elf. The intricate parts of Lochwald seen through her eyes were exactly what Billy required. He couldnât help but think of the life sheâd live. Itâs was far more than his own. Apart from the volitares afloat on the river, Lochwald was a bridge and a few harvest patches of grain and other sorts of vegetables unknown to him. Sheâd taken the liberty of introducing him to a few of the other children, who seemed timid and not in the same fashion of hospitality as Lyra. Something about Billyâs hairless skin set him apart from the others and put fear into their eyes. He was determined to figure out why. Katarâs words were unkind for a reason.
âFamie Yeut,â she called out, each time her wide smile stretched to reveal a gap where her front teeth should have been. Lyra carried a small pouch with her that was tied with a bit of scrap rope from a fishing net. She stuffed all sorts of different colored flowers inside as they walked through a meadow eastward. âFamie Yeut,â she said again, lifting her furry finger to a cluster of jagged stones protruding from the soil.
Billyâs eyes traced the outlines of the uneven stones. Carved deep in the stone were depressions of decay. These were old, ancient stones from long ago. His fingertips brushed over, feeling the history hidden inside them.
âYou must climb down to see the ruins,â her little voice said. Behind one of the stones was a small opening, perfect size to crawl in, like an ax wound in the grass. String similar to the type on her pouch draped inside the hole.
âWill it hold?â he asked, looking at the thin line and pulling on with all his strength.
âWe elves know how to make a robe,â Lyra giggled. She motioned with her hand for him to descend. âTrust is the first step.â
âTo what?â
âDiscovery.â
He repeated the word as the color drained from his face. He was white as a sheet while he advanced down the rope unbeknownst to its strength and praying he would not fall to his death in the process. Heights were not something Billy particularly enjoy dabbling with anymore. As a boy, Billy had scaled trees many times greater than his height, without any sort of fear, but after one hard fall, that all ended. Heâd been frightened ever since, never daring to climb again, but here he was. The rope never seemed to end. The muscles in his fingers fatigued and started cramping up underneath the weight of his body. All of a sudden, this didnât seem like the best idea. How would he get out? He didnât have the strength in his arms to pull himself back up. There were too many thoughts going through his head at once. With a deep breath, Billy proceeded against his better judgment. As soon as he felt the firm stone beneath his feet, the fear died offâ at least for now.
Lyra slid down the rope with ease like a pirate on his respective vessel.
