Out in the hallway, the blond student said, “Hi, my name is Amy Rhodes. Are you a detective?”

“Detective Lockhart,” Natalie said. “What’s on your mind?”

“Tony was with me that night,” she explained in a soft, unformed voice.

“Last Friday night?”

“We’re seeing each other,” she whispered, gesturing for Natalie to follow her farther down the corridor where nobody could overhear them. “His wife doesn’t know about us yet. I mean,” she whispered, “he’s going to leave her, but now’s not a good time.”

“And why is that?” Natalie asked, feeling sorry for this mixed-up young person. Hadn’t anyone warned her there were predators and liars out there in the big bad world?

“Because she’s unstable.”

“Posey Revelli is unstable,” Natalie repeated.

Amy nervously twirled a large silver ring around her index finger. “She’s emotionally wounded from being molested when she was a kid. I feel sorry for her, I really do, but Tony says they fell out of love a long time ago. He’s been wanting to get a divorce for years.”

“He told you that?”

She nodded. “I mean, we didn’t plan on falling in love. It just happened. I shouldn’t be telling you this. He doesn’t want other people to know about us yet.”

Natalie wasn’t sure what to think, except that Tony Revelli was a scumbag. “He told you about his wife being molested?”

“Oh, yeah. She’s neurotic because of it. Tony says she’s bipolar. For instance, it was her birthday a couple of weeks ago, and he took her out to a restaurant where the waitstaff brought out a cake with candles and sang ‘Happy Birthday.’ She got upset, because one of the waiters wore a clown nose, and she’s so sensitive about it, she freaked out and wouldn’t eat the cake, and they had to leave. It makes things so difficult for us, because now’s not a good time to tell her he’s in love with someone else.”

“I see.” Natalie frowned. Maybe it was never the right time to tell someone you’d fallen in love with somebody else. “So Tony was with you last Friday night?”

“After class, we went to my apartment.”

“What time?”

“Around five. I kicked out my roommate. She saw me with Tony. She can tell you.” Amy began to fidget with her necklace, and Natalie could see the silver pendant with its Wiccan symbol on a long silver chain.

“What is that?” she asked.

The girl blushed, clutching the pendant. “A good luck charm.”

“It’s the Eye of Horus.”

Amy tucked the necklace underneath the collar of her blouse. “My mother’s a devout Christian, but I’m not a believer. She thinks I’m following the devil or something. I tried to tell her it’s nothing like that.”

“Sure, lots of people have embraced Wicca.”

“But I’m not a Wiccan, either. I just like it. The eye. It’s not the evil eye. It represents an Egyptian god who protects you. It’s a symbol of protection and healing.”

“I see.”

Her eyes sparkled, and she became animated. “Tony thinks I should lose my dependency on my mother. He’s teaching me how to be more discerning.
