Fran called both households multiple times in the week following the Ball, always offering to help. With that strategy not bearing fruit, she baked a rich chocolate cake and delivered it to the Campbells’.

‘You there, Lizzy? It’s just Fran.’

She waited at the front door, but no one came to greet her. Most farm occupants heard the approaching traffic and met visitors as they arrived. The only living thing that greeted Fran today was a cattle dog. She knocked hard again, unaware that Jack was out on the farm. His sons and eldest daughters were at school, and Liz was doing the weekly grocery shop with her youngest daughter in Bridgetown. Fran considered leaving the cake on the kitchen table with a note, explaining that she thought a friend with six children could always do with some help. She decided against it. As no one had seen her arrive, she decided to travel the fifteen minutes to the Duncans’ to catch up with May with the same motive, to learn what was behind the events at the Ball.
