“I knew it!” Teresa bounced on her toes.

Maybe if I stared at the dark high school long enough it would transform into something more pleasant. Like a man-eating tiger.

High school had been a nightmare. I remained infuriatingly flat-chested, retaining a youthful pudge until late in my teen years. That might not have been so bad on its own, but my Vancouver high school had a large Jewish population. In theory, it should have made life for all my people better. But no. These popular kids were the country club Jews and I was not. My activist cousin Goldie would rather have been shot in the head than be a member. It didn’t appeal to me either, but it made me a target. I was Jewish, but the wrong kind of Jewish, therefore there had to be something wrong with me.

Long story short, I was delighted to leave all that behind. I didn’t expect my teen tormentors to be waiting for me in this game though I didn’t entirely rule it out either, but those years had been brutal, just like whatever waited inside for us would be.

Agreeing we’d be safer holing up in there than remaining out in the open for the eight hours left of the game, we stuck together, scouting classrooms for the best place to hide from vamps and shifters.

As it was too dark to summon Delilah, I’d sandwiched myself between Laurent and Eli. There were no lockers, no furniture, no water fountains or artwork, just long, shadowy corridors and eerily deserted classrooms.

Daw called us over.

Floodlights surrounded the primary-colored swings and slides on the playground out back, throwing the final hundred feet between the back of the high school and the end of the game into a dark slab.

“Sports day from Hell,” Teresa said.

We turned down yet another desolate corridor, our footsteps echoing off the walls. Even Laurent was on edge though that might have been because I kept stepping on the backs of his heels.

We ended up in a small gymnasium with a row of windows along the top of the walls and a high-gloss wooden floor.

“What about waiting out the rest of the game here?” Isla said.

Emmett flopped onto the ground. “Sold.”

Teresa, Daw, and Okeyo didn’t care where they rested. They were tapped out.

Eli and Laurent took positions at opposite doors. The shifter had transitioned into wolf form before joining us here in the gym. Well, that was one way to avoid a conversation with me.

I stayed with my ex, watching him check his ammo and reload his gun. The floor was cold, it hurt my hip to lie on my side, and every tiny shoe squeak and cough boomed through the empty, echoing space.

Sleep proved elusive.

Teresa and Okeyo were conked out. Daw was stretching, which was a good idea. Isla lay on her back, absently rubbing her pec.

The motion reminded me of something, but just as I remembered what it was, Isla left the gym.

I ran after her, cornered her outside, shoved her up against the door, and pressed my palm to her pec.
