October 29: World championship boxing match between champion George Foreman and challenger Mohammed Ali in Zaire. Ali positioned himself on the ropes with Foreman slamming him with body punches. Eventually Foreman had little left and in the eighth round with a series of punches Ali took out the champ. Later he called this strategy the rope-a-dope. . . . August 9: Richard Nixon resigns as president of the United States.
