âWhat are you talking about?â
Maren stopped walking, but she didnât look at me.
âWhat Katori said ⦠about the ghosts. I know what they are.â
âWhat are they?â I asked.
âSouls of the dead.â
I stood there quietly, not sure what to say at first. âI donât understand. Souls of what dead? The dragons?â
âNo, not just the dragons. All souls.â
âHow do you know?â
Maren turned to look at me. âI know it sounds insane, but we need to go where the ferryman was killed. I have to know for sure.â
The ferryman. Demrisâs first victim from when heâd been brought back from the island. What did the ferryman have anything to do with ⦠and then it hit me, and I understood Marenâs logic.
âYou think the ghosts are lost souls?â
âYes.â
âIt seems plausible,â I said. âBut what do the souls have to do with what happened here at the school?â
âIâm not sure,â Maren admitted. âMaybe nothing at all, but itâs still something we need to look into. I hadnât considered it before, but if the ferryman is dead, how do the souls get to the island?â
âThey walk on water?â
âNo,â Maren scoffed. âThey canât touch water, which is why the ferryman took them on his boat.â
I must have forgotten that detail. âAll right. So we go and see if you are correct. And if you are? What then?â
âI havenât thought that far ahead yet.â
I looked at Sion and Demris. They seemed to be doing well, but there was no telling how long that would last. Katori said that magic was gone. I feared how that would affect our dragons, considering their connection to it.
What do you think? I asked Sion. Can you make it there?
Yes.
And what about Demris?
There was a pause.
He says he can handle it.
âIâm on board,â I said. âThereâs just one problem.â
âWhatâs that?â
âLast time we had a guide. Do you remember where this place is?â
I do, Sion said.
âNever mind. Sion knows the way. But weâll have to go on foot.â
âWhy? Itâll be faster if we fly.â
âWe didnât fly last time. We walked there.â
Maren frowned. âWhy didnât we fly? I donât remember anything stopping us before.â
Now that she mentioned it, I couldnât remember the reason either. There was a faint memory floating in the back of my mind, but when I tried to focus on it, the memory eluded me.
âI canât remember, either,â I said.
âThen we fly.â Maren smiled.
It would be faster. I shrugged, and we returned to Sion and Demris. Maren climbed into Demrisâs saddle and waited, both of them watching me. I rubbed Sionâs snout and massaged along her neck, subconsciously trying to stall. I wasnât sure why, but I had a feeling that things were going to take a turn for the worse.
âWe need to fly low,â I said.
I climbed up Sionâs shoulder and settled myself, then nodded at Maren. Demris launched into the sky, and Sion quickly followed after him, taking the lead. We kept low and headed south toward the Sea of Colisle, or The Wasted Deep as the locals called it.
