Chapter Twenty

Callisa watched the ship sail through the night. The oars were banked and the main sail ballooned in the wind that powered them along. Her spirit was drawn toward a stooped figure on the deck as he watched over the crew. His face was suddenly illuminated by moonlight and she saw he was horribly scarred. Evil pulsed from his black aura, tainting all around him. Callisa tried to pull back her awareness, but she wasn’t in control of the dream or vision, whatever it was. Her heart fluttered in panic at the idea that some other force controlled her actions.

From above she watched the ship sailing in open water, navigating the blackness of night only by the stars. If she understood the stars, she may have been able to calculate the route the ship was taking, but she wasn’t given the opportunity to try. The vision pulled her closer and she could see a few of the men were bandaged and bloodied, showing signs of a recent battle. Many were drunk and high-spirited. She guessed, whatever the battle, they had been victorious. Being so close made her skin crawl and she wanted to escape. She felt something else, but it was muted and weak. She realised it was the same presence that had reached out to her once before, and that it was trying to communicate.

Even as the realisation stuck her, the dream image changed. Callisa found herself in a small dwelling, hovering above a bed. It was dark with only a shaft of moonlight falling across the bed to show a child screaming and thrashing under the covers. A lantern lit up and threw the scene into focus. Morane sat down on the bed and pulled a sobbing Beliss into her arms.

‘There are no ships, there are no bad men to hurt you...’ Morane whispered the words automatically, as though she had used them a thousand times before to comfort Beliss.

The child took only a few moments to settle and go back to sleep. Callisa watched Morane sitting and stroking the child’s hair, worry lines etched deep into the older woman’s face.

Callisa woke and sat up in her bed in the Bay of Hope, the sheets damp beneath her, the air chilling her sweating skin. Breathing heavily, she drew the blankets up to her chin knowing not everything she’d experienced was a dream. Beliss had been having the same dreams, about the ship and the killers aboard, but how could that be?

Guilt lanced her; she should never have left the child alone in Turrak. No one else knew about her skills. Only Morane had an inkling, and it seemed the older woman had known more than she’d let on back when Beliss attacked Nadan. Callisa felt the love and empathy pouring from the older woman. She was a good guardian for Beliss; Gohan had chosen her well, but that didn’t mean she could help the child. Callisa wasn’t sure how anyone could help Beliss.

She sighed into the darkness. She wanted so desperately to reach out to Nadan.
