LETTER 1.33 (C. 507–9)

Following upon the concern in Variae 1.32 (above) about the role of pantomimes in maintaining public order during the games in Rome, this letter directs the same urban prefect addressed by the previous one to support the pantomime of the Green Faction with public funds. The letter to Albinus and Avienus referenced here is Variae 1.20 (above).

King Theoderic to Agapitus, Illustris and Urban Prefect

1. A judgment of our serenity, once published, knows nothing of uncertainty; nor may that which has been settled by prudent arrangements be altered by the deception of any opportunity. Pursuant to this, not long ago we gave instructions to the patricians Albinus and Avienus, to the effect that they should select a pantomime for the Green Faction who would befit the games most excellently, which, having been accomplished, they disclosed to us in their own report. 2. And therefore, we have now decided in this present writ that it be confirmed: to whomever the above-mentioned distinguished men have chosen, you should pay without reduction that monthly salary owed to the Green Faction, so that what our foresight has determined for the sake of eradicating disorder should become an opportunity not for riots, but for peace.
