Me: About to board the plane.
Caleb: Canât wait to see you. Iâll be there waiting.
Heâs true to his word, looking handsome in a pair of tailored slacks and a casual button-up as he waits for me down at baggage claim. Iâm in his arms so fast. I let my nerves about this trip get the better of me on the plane, so it feels amazing to have his soothing warmth around me, quelling my unease.
âIâm so happy youâre here,â he says before kissing me. âHow was your flight?â
âAside from the screaming baby across the aisle from me, fine,â I respond lightly with a smile.
âWe need to get you some noise-cancelling headphones.â
âNo joke.â
After we gather my bags, he leads me out to a sleek car thatâs even flashier than the one he drives in Miami.
âWhose car is this?â I ask.
âItâs my parentsâ,â he says as he loads my suitcases.
âNice.â
He opens my door for me, and we are off to the hotel.
âMy parents are excited to meet you.â
I smile, but itâs forced. âMe too.â It isnât that I donât want to meet his parents. I do, because I love Caleb, but itâs nerve-wracking. This is the first time Iâve ever done anything like this, and I worry they wonât approve of me.
Caleb takes my hand in his. âWhy are you fidgeting?â
âAm I?â
âAre you nervous?â
âMaybe a little.â More like a lot.
âYou have nothing to worry about.â He laces his fingers though mine and gives me an encouraging smile.
Thereâs a lot for me to be nervous about. Heâs told me about how he grew up and the unattainable expectations his father puts on him. I worry they will take one look at me and dismiss me as a beach bum who doesnât have lofty enough goals and decide Iâm not good enough for their son.
âWeâre actually going to meet them for dinner tonight.â
âTonight?â I say as my eyes fly in his direction. âI thought we werenât seeing them until tomorrow?â
âThat was the plan, but they ended up making reservations for this evening.â
I was really looking forward to spending time with Caleb, just the two of us. âWhat kind of restaurant are we going to?â
âA nice one.â
âHow nice?â I ask suspiciously, and he smiles. âCaleb?â
âYouâll love the food.â
I smile at his coyness. âThat tells me nothing.â
He gives my hand another squeeze, and I spend the rest of the drive taking in the scenery of the city. He slows the car and pulls through the valet drive. One of the attendants opens my door, and as I step out of the car, the staff is already unloading the bags from the trunk.
âWeâll have these delivered to your room right away, Mr. Bradford.â I give him an inquisitive look, and he explains, âI checked in earlier today.â
âI wouldâve been fine at a Hampton Inn,â I murmur as he leads me into the elegant LondonHouse.
He laughs and shakes his head as if the Hampton Inn is nonsense, not really understanding that this hotel only amplifies my anxiety. My
