Chapter Twenty

Marie

Todd

Marie and Todd.

Brad Hensen

After writing down their names beside their pictures, Mac set the marker down on the ledge of the dry erase board.

“That’s it,” he said, “and I’m not entirely convinced Marie should be up there, but until Tarek brings us the rest of his financial report, including the potential insurance policy, we can’t rule her out.”

“Why not Marie? Why couldn’t she have done it?”

“Well, it seems like she was in the bathroom, for one. There was no blood on her. Her prints don’t match with the ones we found leading to the trees and bush, and I just don’t think she could have stabbed him so deep so many times without more evidence on her.”

“But you believe she could have had Todd do her dirty work?”

He nodded.

“Under Brad Hensen,” Grace pointed to the board and took a sip of coffee while Mac grabbed the marker again, “the motive would be to financially disconnect from Cory. To stop losing money—but he shut the business down.”

Mac wrote out the motive with a question mark. “He even gave him money out of sympathy.”

“Right, so the motive isn’t really working for me after finding out about the last phone call and money he sent.”

“Gotta keep him up there.” Mac stood with his back to her, studying the board. “For Todd, the motive is to have Marie to himself. Get Cory out of the picture because he knew she wouldn’t leave him. Especially not after he told her about Cory and that woman in the elevator. Still working on that warrant, by the way.”

“Then there’s the chance that Marie and Todd were working together. It’s sick to think she would have had him kill Cory for insurance money.”

“And because she might have wanted to be with Todd too, and saw an opportunity after he revealed the possible cheating…”

Mac wrote it all down as Grace finished her coffee.

“I need another one of these,” she said, wiggling her cup around. “I should leave an actual mug here instead of all the Styrofoam we go through.”

“I’ll get you another,” Mac said, grabbing her cup.

“Thanks.” She smiled up at him.

“Be right back.”

As he breezed by her, his cologne wafted toward her.

Is he wearing more than usual?

Flustered, she put her head down, studying the specific pictures she had printed out. She took the photo of Todd and Marie, standing together at the wedding just before Cory called her outside, and used a magnet to stick it by their place together on the board before returning to her seat.

We need to speak to Marie again to learn her real feelings about Todd. Tomorrow is the funeral, and she won’t want to talk then. Maybe we should go today… or maybe after the funeral is better…

Mac walked into the room with a coffee in each hand.

And maybe Mac should be the one to talk to her.

“Brought you something even better than coffee,” he said as Tarek followed behind him.

“What do you have for us?” she asked.

“Financial reports,” he said. “They’re all here, including the insurance policy.
