The Visit

Alicia darted her head around as Frances, Emma, and an invisible Preston looked up at her.

“Please, promise—promise me you won’t be mad at us,” she said.

Frances' eyes grew stern, and Emma’s grew curious.

“Alicia, I’m not promising a thing until you tell me what it is you are trying to tell us,” Emma replied.

Alicia bit down on her tongue.

“W—we—um, we have—.”

“What do we have?” The group turned to see Sloane and Beth walking down the stairs. Alicia visibly froze as they got closer.

“Alicia here seemed like she was about to share a piece of information,” Frances said, looking straight at Alicia, who now completely avoided any form of eye contact. “Am I right, Alicia?”

“Is she?” Sloane asked Alicia.

Alicia laughed awkwardly and turned to Frances.

“What do you mean vital information—I—I just came to ask if you both got anything out of the detective. He—he seemed to know something about the Kappa Boo Beta mascot situation.”

The shakiness of her voice, the nervous laughter after each sentence, made Frances and Emma more suspicious.

“Are you sure about that? You seemed like you wanted—” Emma began.

“I am sure she just wanted to ask about the detective. She has no reason to fib, does she?” Beth cut in.

“No one said she was lying,” Frances threw back, her eyes narrowed in suspicion.

“Then I am glad we are all on the same page.” Sloanes voice was firm enough to conclude the issue.

“You look as white as a ghost, Alicia,” Sloane added. Alicia took the cue and smiled tightly.

“I am, aren’t I?”

“You should go to bed. Beth and I will help you to your room.”

“I am sure she can walk,” Frances murmured under her breath.

She and Sloane engaged in a brief battle of stares before Beth broke the ice.

“You let us know about any progress you make with the case. We need to get back to our families soon, and I’m sure Jessica’s husband is a mess. He’ll want an update,” she said.

Emma nodded stiffly; the tension in the air was as thick as fog. It was an obvious battle of nerves.

“Of course,” she replied.

“Did you see that?” Frances whispered fiercely after the ladies left. “You cannot tell me that isn’t suspicious.”

Emma inhaled. It was more than suspicious; it was borderline eerie. Alicia obviously had something she wanted to share.

A sudden gasp made them turn to an almost forgotten Preston. “Do you think they took Jessica?” he asked.

“I don’t think so,” Emma replied. “All three of them have been in here all day.”

“They could have hired someone to take her out,” he quipped.

“But why would they?” Emma asked. “We are missing information on that old mascot. It’s got to be bigger than just the four of them. Or maybe they are the only ones that know the secret?”

Emma pressed her chin in thought. “That could be true, but why wait till they get here? They could have easily taken her out on their way here; it's three against one after all.”

Frances rolled her eyes. “I don’t know, Sherlock. Maybe
