Chapter Ten

Freedom for a Servant

“What am I to do now?” Doone asked.

He sat on Sir Gallad’s horse and let the steed wander back to where Sir Gallad’s body lay.

Did Miric really mean it? Was Doone free?

To be free! The thought excited him and made him nervous at the same time. What would he do if he was free?

Miric was a master of broken promises and countless lies. Doone suspected there was little sincerity to his words. After Doone returned the armor to its rightful owner, he would have to go back and pretend it had never happened. But then with the Forest Knight dead, who would save the queen from her ailing health? Who would look for Princess Mitra? She hadn’t been with Knight Gallad when Doone had found the body.

If the apparition of Sir Gallad’s ghost meant anything to Miric, Doone might be able to persuade him to take up the Forest Knight’s cause. Still, Doone doubted it would work.

The only master Miric obeyed was fear and intimidation.

Doone dreaded returning to Miric.

The forest was quiet and calm, aside from the crunching of the white steed’s footsteps. Mist hid the path and thickened as he rode. Doone scarcely noticed as he pondered his situation. He washed the sap and moss off his face in the stream until the entire sticky disguise was gone. He followed the stream down to where he remembered the body had been the day before.

The air smelled vaguely smoky, and when he looked up into the blue sky, he saw a plume of gray clouds billowing from the trees. Doone’s first thought was Miric might be trying to cook himself something to eat—and failing.

Doone still wore the armor he intended to return. He planned on removing the suit as soon as he reached the body. Then he’d have to return to Miric.

He was on his way to find Sir Gallad, when he heard the scream from up ahead.

It sounded like a woman.

Was someone hurt? Doone’s heart pounded in his chest, and adrenaline surged through him.

He held tightly onto the reins and galloped towards the voice, not quite sure where he was headed. A wall of mist mingled with the clouds of gritty ash. Doone followed the stream, the horse kicking up fresh water as she splashed along the banks.

The screams grew louder. Doone had trained with sticks to provide someone for Miric to practice with. He could fight if he needed to—but he wasn’t supposed to without his master’s permission. Only free men were permitted to take up weapons.

Was he a free man? He still didn’t know.

On the other side of the water, he saw a fire through the haze of smoke.

Across the water, two men struggled with a wild animal over a tree stump near the bank. One of the men fell onto his backside before righting himself and lunging forward. From a distance, it looked like the animal was winning. The second man, tall and slender, slipped in the mud along the banks. A brown woven bag went flying, herbs tumbling out.
