One week later, Cassie pulled at the collar of her server uniform as the catering manager droned on about their responsibilities for the evening.

“Don’t these shirts smell weird to you?” she whispered to Ronan as they stood in the back of the room. “And what are they made of? They are so itchy.”

“Shh,” he replied. “Pay attention. You’re going to make us stand out.”

The manager finally finished going over their responsibilities for the evening, and he told the room full of waiters and waitresses that they had fifteen minutes before they needed to report to the kitchen to get their serving trays.

Cassie and Ronan lagged behind the rest of the servers, making their way as slowly as possible down the expansive, ornate hallway of the Roscoe mansion, their footsteps not making a sound on the plush red carpet.

“God, that was tedious,” Cassie said. “How hard can it be to walk around a bunch of rich people and offer them appetizers?”

“You do know that you’re rich, right Cass?” Ronan asked.

“Not like this I’m not. My dad’s money hasn’t been sitting in a family vault for centuries.”

Ronan gave her a pointed look.

“Okay, okay. Yes, that made me sound like a complete brat. I know I’m rich. I’m just annoyed that we have to do this tonight. I mean, why couldn’t Eli have just gotten all of us invited to this party?”

“You’re asking why he couldn’t swing invitations to the Roscoes’ party for two people that the old families unanimously hate?”

“We could have blended in,” she mumbled.

“This is the only way we blend in,” Ronan said, gesturing to their uniforms. “Eli was right. No one here will notice us as servers. But you know there’s no way we could have been subtle party guests.”

“It’s just not fair. Adele gets to come as Eli’s…I mean, they both get to come as guests and enjoy the party while we have to work.”

Ronan noticed the color rising in Cassie’s cheeks. He tried to hide his surprise. In all the time that he’d known Cassie, he’d never seen her jealous before, especially not when it came to Eli. Then again, Eli had never taken another girl on a date until now. Even if that date was with Adele, and even if it was just a cover so that they could try to find any more evidence about memory murder—as they’d taken to calling it—in the Roscoe mansion. Apparently, that was too much of a date for Cassie’s liking.

“Well, if it makes you feel better,” Ronan began, choosing his words carefully. “Eli told me he wished he could switch places with me. You know these kind of parties aren’t really his thing.”

Cassie brightened a bit at that. “Yeah, well, who could blame him? This will probably be such a dull evening. I feel bad for him.”

Ronan decided not to point out that two minutes ago, Cassie had been upset about not being allowed to attend the terribly boring party whose guests she now pitied. They finally made it to the large kitchen where long tables were loaded with silver appetizer trays.
