Chapter 20 - The Angry Cousins

“I tell you to develop a plan to drive out the humans, and you befriend them instead?!?!” the king yelled.

Numo stood at attention next to Irsu, something the Amblu-gane had never seen the scout do. Apparently, the king was scary enough to pull some military discipline out of the grizzled loner. Coragg stood behind the two targets of the King’s fury, probably conflicted whether to support his monarch or his friend. Coragg’s loyalty was something Irsu would never question, but this event put Coragg in a difficult situation. He couldn’t stay loyal to both king and commander if the order came to jail Irsu for treason.

They were deep in the King’s chambers, so this particular dressing down was a private affair, between those present and a few guards.

Irsu stayed silent, as did Numo.

It was best to let the monarch vent his rage, and as long as he didn’t suddenly order them executed the explanation would be better received once the rage was spent into the air and lost down the corridors of the Lost Hold.

“Give me a good reason why I shouldn’t have you both executed immediately. Coragg, draw your blade.”

The sound of steel leaving a scabbard behind Irsu made him flinch inside, although whether anyone noticed was unknown. Numo didn’t even blink from what Irsu could see to the side.

“I have something for you,” Irsu said as he reached into the satchel at his side and set a cylinder on the table the king was using for a desk. “A gift from the humans.”

“What is this thing?” the monarch demanded to know.

“The woman I befriended called it a ‘Thermos’,” Irsu said. “The best argument I have for sparing Numo’s life is inside. You can do with mine as you will, but he was simply following my orders.”

“Inside?”

“May I?” Irsu said, gesturing toward the Thermos.

“Go ahead, but you better impress me, Amblu-gane, or you’re going to see the inside of a cell for a long time.”

Irsu opened the flask and grabbed a goblet from the wine set on the table. He poured the ‘Schokolade und Wodka’ into the cup and handed it to the King.

It was still steaming.

Irsu looked at the Thermos. What a marvel of magic it was! The humans, despite Hagirr’s testimony to all the clans otherwise, seemed to possess at least some magic in their world.

“Drink,” Irsu said. “Your life will be different.”

The King took a cautious sip just as the doors to the chamber flew open and one of the King’s guards skidded across the floor.

The look of bliss that started to spread over the King’s face turned to shock, and then anger at the intrusion.

Oh no! Kordina.

Irsu’s wife stormed into the room, bellowing accusations at both him and the King.

“Scorriss Bloodstone! What is the meaning of arresting my husband?” she growled. Before he could answer, she turned to Irsu. “And you! What do you think you’re doing? I picked you, coal pit digger, out of all the males in this hold and you squander that by disobeying my cousin’s orders?”

Shocked faces stared at her.
