Chapter Five

Aaron held the back door to the building open for Samantha, feeling like he was in a weird time loop or alternate reality. How had he ended up on a date with Samantha? She was like a sister–and if not a sister, a cousin. Family. Certainly not someone he was romantically interested in. Not that there was anything wrong with her per se. She was just… Samantha, the person he loaned a pair of shorts to when she needed them.

This whole set-up situation was incredibly strange. Sure, residents of The Palms were generally curious about what he did with Sweetie, and with her and Bear’s relationship. But they’d never gotten involved or interested in his social life. Maybe they were all just bored?

Poor Samantha had been railroaded into this date as quickly as he had. He needed to give her a chance to bow out gracefully. “We don’t really have to do this if you have somewhere else you need to be.”

She looked over her shoulder, as if the group of busy bodies who orchestrated this evening walked ten feet behind them to make sure they actually went on the date. He wouldn’t put it past them.

Grams was definitely the ringleader. He hadn’t bought her sick act at all. The dramatic swoop she’d made with her hand to her forehead had ensured that and the flopping back in the chair. And now, so many events from the past couple of weeks suddenly made sense. The way she always dragged Samantha along to talk to him. Samantha thinking that Sweetie’s schedule needed to change. Even though it did, Grams hadn’t known that.

“I don't want to disappoint them.” Samantha looked down at her dress. It had a 1950s vibe to it. The colors and patterns on it reminded him of Diamond Cove itself. The beach, the sunset, the palm trees, there was definitely a theme going on. The only thing that would have made it more Diamond Cove was if it had an alligator crawling around the hem attached to a golden retriever by a leash.

“They’re going to ask me how the evening went.” She lightly touched her hair which was down. “And I'm going to have to tell them something. I’d rather not lie…”

Aaron couldn’t agree more with her logic. “Grandma Betty will drill me too.” He scratched his chin, thinking of Grams’s generous nature and age. Ninety-three was… precarious. He didn't like to think about it, but he was continually aware that she wouldn’t live forever. “I guess there’s nothing to it. We’re going on a picnic.” He lifted the basket up. It wasn’t very heavy, which made him wonder how much food was actually in there. Grams never ate much, so perhaps it was smaller servings.

“This will be good.” Samantha nodded as if she was trying to convince herself of the fact. “It’ll give the residents something to talk about for the next couple of days. Something of interest because it’s new.”

Aaron screwed up his face. “You mean gossip?”

Samantha tipped her head back and laughed.
