The Tale of the Broken Arrows

As the guests gathered around the table, they beheld black arrows—most of them broken—of all shapes and sizes. They looked up questioningly at their host as these artifacts seemed to hold great importance to Chief Joseph.

“Father Mike and JW have told me that you will be going to the ghost town of Kirwin tomorrow. I thought that you might like to hear some of the tales and legends that surround this town and the Broken Arrow Mine. You’re probably wondering why it is called a ghost town?” Chief Joseph spoke as if he was remembering a story from long ago.

“I am named after the most famous of all my ancestors, Chief Joseph. Back in the 1800s, he was the leader of his tribe, the Nez Perce Indians. Chief Joseph is known for his tragic journey as he fled the US Army, trying to escape and find a home for his people. In 1877, the federal government pressured the Nez Perce to give up millions of acres of their homeland to feed the gold rush that was sweeping the country at that time. Refusing to be forced onto a reservation, a band of about seven hundred men, women, and children travelled fourteen hundred miles across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming trying to make it to Canada. They failed.
