JAY GRABBED THE BOOK from Cindy. Dexter looked over Jay’s shoulder at the number on the spine of the book.

“You’re right,” breathed Jay. “The same numbers. The same letters. This is it. This is the book someone wants!”

“And I’ve got it,” said Cindy. “And I’m scared.”

“Don’t be silly,” said Jay. “Dexter and I are here with you. And if anyone wants the book they can just ask us for it. That’s easy.”

“Nothing’s easy,” said Cindy. She took the book from Jay’s grasp. “What’s important about this book anyway? Magic Here, There, Everywhere, by Smuckers.” She opened the book and quickly leafed through it. Then she shook it. “There’s nothing in it,” she announced.

“Let me look,” said Jay. He examined the book carefully. “There are some pencil marks on some of the pages. Look. You can hardly see them.” They took turns looking at the strange marks.

“It’s a code!” said Cindy.

“Or else it’s just someone doodling,” suggested Dexter.

“No one doodles in a library book,” said Cindy indignantly.

“They don’t?” asked Jay innocently.

“They shouldn’t,” retorted Cindy.

Cindy opened her notebook and turned a page. “Book,” she wrote. “Title: Magic Here, There, Everywhere.”
