The following morning after breakfast, Jennie packed up her little brother and Bernie and headed home. When she pulled into the empty driveway she felt a moment’s panic. That subsided when Mom opened the door. Mom had parked the Oldsmobile in the garage.

Nick paused to get kissed and hugged, then broke away. “Come on, Bernie, let’s find you some food.”

“Clean out his dishes first,” Mom yelled after him.

After a quick hug, Jennie followed her mother inside and asked how her evening with Michael had gone.

“Michael?” Mom looked confused. “Where did you get the idea I was with Michael?”

“Kate said you were meeting someone—I mean, who else would you meet?”

“Any number of people, actually.” She closed the door and headed for the kitchen.

“So who was it?”

“I’d rather not talk about that just now. I’m in the middle of a project.” She headed for the office. “Shouldn’t take me too long—another hour.”

“Mom,” Jennie whined. “I hate it when you do that. Tell me. Did you find another boyfriend or something?”

“Don’t take that tone with me, young lady: You’re in enough trouble already.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be snotty, I’m just curious.”

She hauled in a deep what-am-I-going-to-do-with-you sigh. “Yes, and that curiosity is precisely what Lieutenant Rastovski and I were talking about last evening.”

“You were out with Rastovski? Mom, how could you? Michael is—”

“Michael is my fiancé. And no, I’m not dating the lieutenant—nor do I intend to. We do, however, have a mutual interest in you.”

Jennie plunked herself down on the chair Mom kept in her office for clients. “You were right, I don’t want to know.”

“He called me yesterday and asked if we could meet to discuss you-or rather your interference in the Mancini case.”

Jennie winced. “I was only trying to help. He thought Mancini committed suicide—”

“And you decided to straighten him out.”

“He was wrong—” Anger seeped in to replace her confusion. “Rastovski had no business talking to you about me.”

“I beg your pardon.” Mom’s cheeks were nearly as red as her hair. “The last time I looked, you were still underage. That makes me responsible for you. And as a responsible parent I intend to keep you out of trouble.”

Jennie folded her arms and clamped her jaws together. It was going to be a long day.

“Jennie, despite what you often read in mysteries or have seen on Murder, She Wrote,” Mom went on, “police officers are not bungling idiots who’ll do anything to keep from solving murder cases.”

“I know that, but—”

“You also committed a crime,” Mom interrupted.

“Yeah, well, so did Michael. For your information, we saved Gavin’s life.”

“Lieutenant Rastovski is thinking seriously about arresting both of you for obstruction of justice. He’s hoping maybe that will cure you of this crazy idea you have about being a detective.”

“Fine, let them arrest me. I’ll call Uncle Jeff.” Jeff White Cloud was Mom’s brother-in-law and a lawyer.

Mom raised her hands in mock surrender, tossed Jennie a why-me look, then scooped up a folder. “You’re grounded. For the next week, or until the police solve this case, you are not leaving this house.
