“How do we know you didn’t do it?” I asked. “Pirates Inc. could have made a lot of money selling this book.”

“Sure, such an artifact would fetch a very high price.” The man shrugged. “But it wasn’t the artifact we were looking for.”

“Auntie Rilla said you were in Vietnam when she found the syair, but you didn’t try to take it,” Eliza said.

“That’s half right,” the man said, smiling. “Perhaps you ought to look closer to home instead of to the seas.”

“That-does-not-mean-anything,” Watson said. Fortunately, he didn’t look any worse for wear. I didn’t know what I would do if anything bad happened to Watson again.

“One last thing,” the man continued, adjusting his cap. “We didn’t do this, but if you ever find yourself investigating something we did do, I strongly suggest you leave it alone.”

“Or what?” I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear the answer.

He smiled again, his white teeth flashing. “That’s the Sultan Mosque, right? Thanks for your help.”

He walked towards the building he had just asked about. When he was what I judged to be a safe distance away, I said, “Let’s get back inside Wardah.”

My heart was pounding. When I looked at Eliza, she appeared completely shocked. Even Watson was silent.

We slowly backed our way up the steps and reentered the bookstore. Officer Siva looked up when we came back in.

“I thought you guys were going to—” he broke off. “What’s wrong?”

“Pirates Inc.,” I said. “They found us.”
