Chapter 17
Rainy days were worse than windy days. Rain meant no going to the infirmaryâall outdoor activities were canceled, so itâd be way too obvious if we went hiking in the pouring rain. Those days, I had to just wonder how the cranes were doing and what photos were sitting on the memory card. Hopefully more than just swaying plants and rain.
One morning, we were soaked after the short run from breakfast to the Oddballs cabin, with the wind blowing the rain sideways. After changing into dry clothes, I flopped onto a bed and pulled up the covers.
âWonder what the cranes do when itâs raining like this,â I said.
âHang out under some trees, maybe,â said Emma.
âGuess weâll see whenever we can check the camera again,â said Ant. âTill then, we need something to distract us.â
âMaybe a game?â I said, even though nothing would take my mind off the cranes.
âAnother round of truth or truth?â said Emma.
âOkay,â said Georgie. âWhoâs first?â
âI have one for Ant!â said Emma. âTruthâwhy are you called Ant? And donât tell us itâs because you like ants. Thereâs more to it than that.â
Ant sighed and said, âFine. But it doesnât leave this cabin.â
âRight,â said Georgie. âOddballs promise.â
âOkay, this was in fifth grade, and we were outside for PE, playing softball. I was in center field. I can catch anything. Not many fifth graders can hit that far, but if anyone had a pop fly or a line driveâ¦â
âWe get it, youâre a star athlete,â said Emma. âAnywayâ¦â
âAnyway,â Ant continued, âmy ankle started stinging and itching. When I reached down to scratch, fire ants were crawling all over me.â
âOh no,â said Georgie.
âExactly. I started yelling and trying to brush them off my jeans, but there were too many. Pretty soon the other kids gathered around, and then Coach Vogel came running up. She got everyone to back away and told me, âHurry, take your pants off!â I was so desperate for the biting to stop, I almost did take them off. But then I rememberedâ¦hedgehogs.â
âUm, hedgehogs?â I said.
âOn my underwear,â said Ant, looking grim. âMy underwear had little hedgehogs all over them. Hedgehogs wearing Santa hats.â
We all groaned and laughed a little, feeling Antâs embarrassment.
âYeah,â she continued. âDo I look like someone whoâd have underwear with cute little animals on them? And even worse, it was waaay past Christmas. I didnât care when I grabbed them from the dresser that morning. âCause whoâs going to see them, right?â
âOnly your whole class,â said Emma.
âI wasnât about to let that happen,â said Ant. âIâd rather die by ant bite.â
âWhatâd you do?â Georgie asked.
âBroke away from Coach Vogel and ran into the school, with every fire ant in town biting my legs. I ran straight to the nurseâs office, yelling âAnts!â the whole way.â
We were all laughing by then. âI wish I couldâve seen that,â I said.
âWell, hereâs a reenactment for you.â Ant stood up and ran around the cabin, flailing her arms, face contorted in pain, calling out âAnts! Ants!â between pretend sobs.
