LETTER #15 (January)

Dear Secret Sister,

Darla, Sarah, and I spent New Year’s Eve the same way we spent Christmas eve. In Miss Anderson’s room, having our own little party. The other two girls didn’t show up, which was more than fine with us. Although I think Miss Anderson was a little disappointed.

But she seemed to have a wonderful time as we talked about books, and writing, and plants, and ideas.

I have made a New Year’s resolution that I will write more. My goal is to fill my blue journal with all sorts of stories and poetry. I will keep my grades up, of course. But I feel inspired to write.

I already have some short stories tucked in there, scrawled on loose-leaf papers. I tried to practice writing neatly, but once the story gets started, it’s hard for my hand to keep up with my brain. Writing free-hand is so much different than writing on my computer. But I am loving every minute of it.

We were discussing possible resolutions when I mentioned my goal to the group. Miss Anderson said that if I wanted a real challenge, I could turn in a story to her every Monday. I seem to work better with deadlines, so I agreed to the challenge. And I already have my first story to turn in when Monday comes.

The four of us stayed up until midnight, telling stories and reading to one another. We each chose some of our favorite books and read passages out of them that showed why it was one of our favorites.

As we read, I discovered that Sarah likes science fiction, which I never would have guessed. Miss Anderson likes Regency romances and Gothic horror. And I already knew that Darla had a penchant for dark fantasy and urban fantasy. But I think what a person reads tells a lot about them to a certain degree.

I also discovered that Sarah wants to try her hand at writing science fiction, instead of the fantasy world that we had been creating. She even had a story to read out loud to us that evening. It was really good. So good in fact, I asked to borrow a few of her science fiction books. She may have me hooked on the genre!

After midnight struck, we all read one last favorite passage and then Miss Anderson sent us off to bed. She wanted us to get back to a regular sleep schedule before classes started in a few days.

We went back to Darla’s and my room and read to one another until dawn. What Miss Anderson didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her.

Sarah moved back into her room on the morning of the second. All of the students started filing back to school to be ready for classes on the third.

Our crowded room felt empty without Sarah camped out on the floor anymore. Darla and I both missed her. And we could both tell that she was reluctant to return to her own room to wait for Freda to return from her winter break.
