The One-legged Imam dropped by after jummah prayers. He told Dadi he has no proof that we are the tomato throwers, but he has no proof that we are not the tomato throwers either. He lifted his shalwar and showed us his wooden leg. Even though we were allowed to touch it, none of us wanted to.

In case we were the tomato throwers, Dadi and Jibbi Phuppo made us bow down our heads and say sorry to him. In case we weren’t, we had to swear to defend him against the tomato-throwing gang of hooligans. We tugged at the skin on our throats and shouted, “Allahu Akbar,” and swore to defend him against the raised-in-a-zoo hooligans attacking a man of God. Then Dadi and Jibbi Phuppo fed him all our best pieces of lamb.

He studied the dent on Tutoo’s left arm from her polio shot for a long time, then limped home. Later in the evening, he rang the bell at the gate, smiled at us with his crooked teeth and limped off to the neighbor’s house. By our gate, he had propped up a cricket bat and four tennis balls wrapped in black electrical tape.
