I’m a knut, I’m a knut,

Oh, I’m the knuttiest one of them all…

The voice faded as Atkins finished climbing the stairs and came into the room. Denton, his now-daily walk to the zoo and back already completed, heard him come towards his chair, the voice still humming. A morning newspaper was dropped into his lap, and Atkins began to set up the folding table.

‘So how was the millionaire, Major?’

‘Puzzling. I’m thinking.’

He heard Atkins pour tea; the cup and saucer, then an arm appeared in front of him; he took the tea. A plate of Peek Frean’s breakfast biscuits followed. Denton was lost in the mental squirrel cage of the night before. He remained indifferent to a silence that usually meant that Atkins wanted to talk; he hardly heard several throat-clearings and a cough. Eventually, Atkins moved where Denton could see him. ‘You going out today?’

‘Not sure.’

‘Doctor’s coming to see you noonish.’

‘I may go out after that, then.’

‘Want to give a hint as to clothes?’
