Chapter 15:

Ali woke up to the empty spot next to her in bed, the smell of pancakes in the air, a faint symphony of clangs and pings coming from the kitchen. The sound of a soft hum. As she rolled over to grab her phone on the nightstand to check the time, she found a hot cup of coffee on the nightstand with a sticky note that read “Happy Birthday, err I mean, happy totally normal day, sweet girl” with a heart, B at the bottom. 32 years of life, Ali thought to herself, mildly surprised that she made it this far. Ali turned and shoved her face into the pillow, half not wanting to wake up for the day yet, half overwhelmed at the little pitter-patter in her heart and the beautiful woman cooking in her kitchen. She decided to roll out of bed, her boxers rolled halfway up her stomach, her white tank top hardly serving as a shirt at all. She grabbed her coffee and waltzed to the kitchen, where she found a totally unaware Brynn dancing as she whisked more pancake batter, despite the mountain of pancakes sitting next to the stove. Ali's oversized white shirt draped over Brynn's body and fell long like a dress, the only other cloth on her skin being the black fuzzy socks on her feet. “Thank you,” Ali whispered, wrapping her arms around her romantically. Well, it would have been romantic if Brynn hadn’t jumped out of shock, her arm hitting Ali's, and the hot coffee spilling onto the floor and each other. Brynn immediately put her arm under cold water and burst out in laughter.

“I’m so fucking sorry,” Ali laughed as she grabbed a roll of paper towels and started cleaning her off… “Are you okay?”

Brynn nodded, simultaneously pouting her lips as she held up her red and slightly burned forearm. “It was really cute in theory, you know,” she mocked.

After the two got cleaned up, Ali sat down at her small round dining room table that Brynn had filled with hashbrowns, pancakes, eggs, and all the pancake toppings you could imagine. “I feel very spoiled. Thank you,” Ali remarked, her heart as achingly full as her stomach.

“I just feel lucky to be a part of your day… and that you’re letting me celebrate it with you… Now go get ready!”

“Oh god.”

“You’ll like it! I promise. Just think of it as a date day and not a birthday thing.”

Ali rolled her eyes and made her way to the shower while Brynn cleaned up the kitchen before joining in washing up with her.

As they stepped out of the apartment and off to whatever awaited them that Brynn had planned for the day, Ali saw a big bouquet of flowers at her doorstep. Before picking them up, she pulled out the card from the top.

Ali,

I know you hate your birthday, and I’m pretty sure you also hate me, but we spent so many birthdays together that it didn’t feel right to ignore it altogether.
