CHAPTER 10

GREGOR

As we stepped into the fray, my heart felt heavy with betrayal. My senses were assaulted by the chaos around me. The pungent smell of fear and anger mingled with the acrid scent of burning torches.

The air was thick with tension, and I could taste the bitterness of it on my tongue. The town square of Evermore City was engulfed in a cacophony of raised voices, cries of pain, and the frightening sound of magic being unleashed. The once familiar cobblestone streets were now a battleground, and the woman I loved—the woman I thought I knew—stood beside me, a stranger in her own skin.

"Gregor, we need to find a way to stop this!" Poppy yelled over the noise, her eyes wide with fear.

I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to focus on the task at hand. "You're right. We need to get to the center of the conflict and try to calm both sides down before it spreads through the city."

As we moved deeper into the chaos, the sharp sounds of breaking glass and splintering wood filled the air. My skin prickled with the sensation of magical energy crackling around me, and I could feel the heat of the flames licking at the sides of the buildings. The entire scene was a vivid, nightmarish blur of colors and movement as the supernatural community and Monsters No More clashed violently.

"We need to get through!" I shouted, my voice desperate, as I pushed my way past a pair of brawling werewolves, their snarls and growls filling my ears. The weight of the situation threatened to crush me, and the pain in my chest intensified with every step.

Poppy reached out to me, her touch a fleeting, almost ghostly sensation against my arm. "Gregor, look out!"

Her warning came just in time. I ducked as a bolt of magical energy whizzed past my head, its electric hum leaving a ringing in my ears. I could feel the residual heat of it as it narrowly missed me, and I knew that we were in more danger than ever before. We had to act fast.

"Poppy, we have to split up!" I yelled, the words catching in my throat as I realized the implications of what I was saying. "We'll cover more ground that way. Try to reason with whoever you can!"

Her eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination, and she gave a reluctant nod. "Be careful, Gregor."

As we parted ways, the hurt and betrayal that had been simmering within me threatened to boil over. The woman I loved was now a stranger, and as we threw ourselves into the heart of the chaos, I couldn't help but wonder if our love could ever be mended, or if the rift between us would only continue to grow.

Wading through the chaos, I focused on saving as many people as possible, regardless of their origins. My hands trembled as I helped a young fae woman whose delicate wings had been tattered by a vicious attack. The sound of
