Iawoke alone in Ralph’s bed. Stretching, I realized that once again, his presence had let me sleep with no nightmares. I could get used to that. Too bad the Shadowbinders would undoubtedly discover me, and I’d have to run yet another time. I wanted to believe we could come up with a plan to get them off my trail, but I didn’t have much faith. And if they found me, I would leave.

It was one thing for Ralph to protect a woman from a vengeful husband or irate pander, but something completely different with the Shadowbinders. I’d never seen him carry a weapon larger than a knife at his belt, and no matter how strong or skilled a fighter he was, he couldn’t defeat a large group of armed trolls and men.

With a wry smile, I recognized the paradox of accepting that fact while still holding guilt over my sixteen-year-old self’s inaction when faced with a large group of trolls. To protect Ralph, Lysander, and the others, I would flee. Broken heart or no.
