Once I got home, I spent the whole evening trying to get a vision from that stupid wooden horse. I wanted to learn to scry, but the weirdness of the horse made cracking it a priority. It felt like looking at it through the back of a one-way mirror. I could see it, but my powers slid right over the surface. The internet wasn’t much help, but it’s not like I’d been doing this long enough to know where to look. By the time I went to bed on Tuesday night, I was exhausted and frustrated.

Something was off. And when things were off with my powers, I went straight to Missing Pieces. Although the store didn’t open until nine, Olive usually showed up early to get ready for the day. As soon as I dropped Kyle off at preschool, I raced over, not even stopping for my morning latte.

“Is Sam here?” The words were out of my mouth practically before I’d crossed the threshold. Only after I asked did I realize that, if Sam was in the store, I didn’t have a good excuse for asking about him.

A look of surprise crossed Olive’s face. Possibly because I was carrying a rocking horse. “No, he’s at the gym. You brought him a rocking horse?”

“Okay, good. And no, I brought you a rocking horse. I mean…” I stopped to gather my thoughts. In my excitement, my mind was racing all over the place.

“Aly? You’re almost an hour early. Is everything okay?”

“Honestly, I’m not sure.” I set the toy on the bistro table near the register. “I met Katrina’s sister yesterday, and she gave me this rocking horse that belonged to the family for generations. I’m desperate to see what it can tell me. You. Us.”

“That’s wonderful!” Olive clapped her hands together. “Did you have a vision? Actually, I suppose you would have opened with that…So that’s why you were asking if Sam was here. What happened?”

“I tried.”

“I’m guessing it didn’t work. My powers wouldn’t be needed if you’d seen Katrina’s death.”

Instead of confirming her guess, I asked, “Is it possible to have a glitch in my powers?”

“What do you mean?”

“Something was off. My vision was, for lack of a better word, blank. Like, I saw and felt nothing. A vision of blankness. Is that a thing?”

“If you had it, it must be a thing,” she said. “But the question is, why would that happen?”

“Am I being blocked? According to Mary, the rocking horse was in the house when Katrina died. She owned it, and that was an important event.” I sighed. “I thought I would see her death. This is so annoying. Even if the killer’s face wasn’t there, I should have gotten something.”

Olive tsked. “I understand that. You must be disappointed.”

“I am, but there’s more. With a family heirloom, something that’s been passed down for generations, you’d expect to get something off it. Even if it wasn’t an item that had meaning to Katrina herself, a parent? A grandparent? No one
