Later that night, we all attended a party on the beach to let off steam. Daelon had been able to stay awake all day, and he promised that my energy and the herbal mixtures and crystals from the healers were all making him feel amazing. I believed him, because I saw it in his eyes, but I still worried. How much time did we have before the poison reached his brain?
Tiki torches were lit, and string lights twinkled as they wrapped around palm trees and the structures built for serving food and drinks. There was even a stage for live music where Prairie and Jesco had already found themselves with the other musicians from the Sophrosyne and Aurora Aurea covens. They were singing and playing various instruments, improvising and learning from each other as they went. Witches were dancing and swimming and talking and casting spells, and the energy of it all was so intoxicating that I almost forgot the intensity of the day.
âYouâre lying to me about something,â Daelon said, his fingers intertwined with mine as we entered the lively, soulful scene. He saw the weary look on my face and sighed. âI want to do for you what you did for me, back at the start, when you trusted me with no logical reason to do so.â
âThatâs what I need from you.â
âBut that ended in me betraying you,â he said, stopping and forcing me to face him. âIâm only going to tell you this once: I will never allow that to happen. If you werenât lying to our faces earlier, and you really are still committed to finding a third choice, then great. So am I. But if you were lying to us all, and youâre planning on doing anything more than what I ordered you to do, know that I will do everything in my power to stop you. Everything.â His voice had a cutting edge, reminding me instantly of his role as Commander.
I stared him straight in the eyes, my power flaring at his implications and tone. âI would expect nothing less.â
His eyes widened slightly before narrowing. He studied my face, and I felt him reaching into my soul, but Iâd already warded what he wanted, making it far out of reach. Instead, I fed Daelon and his side of the soul bond exactly what he expected to find: fear of his death, my determination and my love for him, my anger at him for doubting me.
Yet, there was still doubt as his eyes traveled the length of my body, which was draped in a soft, form-fitting red dress with a sweetheart neckline. That doubt was washed away when I put my hands on both sides of his face, and I leaned in and met his lips and sparked fire.
Aliâs voice broke through our trance. âGuys, guys!â
âWhat?â I said, slowly breaking free of our embrace.
âSwim?â
I rolled my eyes, slowly breaking into a grin. Mer and Skye caught up with him, and they were all flushed from dancing.
