The English Douglas firm bore a long lineage of elegant flat-twin motorcycles stretching back to motorcyclingâs pioneer days. But in 1948, Douglas chief Claude McCormack got religion. While vacationing in Italy, he was amazed by the Vespas and other scooters buzzing through the streets like nests of insects. Douglas saw a business venture, contacted Piaggio, and first showed an imported Piaggio Vespa with Douglas Vespa nameplate on the front legshield at the 1949 Earls Court Show in London. Plans were announced to build 10,000 Vespas in England.
