In Rope, Cadell discusses the “Superman” philosophy with his former students, Shaw and Morgan, unaware that they had already seized upon this concept in order to justify their homicide. To them, they are proving themselves to be Supermen in Nietzsche’s construction by embracing anarchy. The teen boys in Murder by Numbers, played by Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt, also quote Nietzsche in their egocentric pursuit of murder. Eventually, whether in the films, or in reality, the detectives close in.

Leopold and Loeb are not the only killers with giant egos who believed they could murder without consequence. Known as the “Dexter Killer” Mark Twitchell spent his life trying to attain fame. His nickname was coined after the popular Showtime series Dexter (2006–2013) because of Twitchell’s insistence that the titular character’s acts (played by Michael C. Hall) inspired him to kill. In Dexter, a damaged blood splatter analyst kills by night, exorcising his own demons by murdering people who are criminals themselves.

Although Twitchell, born in 1979, lived far from the glitz of Hollywood, he worked to become a filmmaker in Canada. A huge Star Wars fan, he directed an independent prequel to the series, which featured actor Jeremy Bulloch, the original Boba Fett. Twitchell also produced a short horror film and had written a script for a series called Day Players (2008). Cracking into the film business is notoriously difficult, so for a man like Twitchell, who was known to have a sizable ego, it began to be too steep of a proverbial hill to climb. He needed a different angle, a revitalization of an old idea. There were thousands of scripts and films about serial killers, but what if he actually became one? What if he documented his real-life murders, never revealing how true they were?

This twisted idea developed into a reality when Mark Twitchell began to pose as a woman on online dating sites. His first victim, Gilles Tetreault, was lured to a garage in Edmonton, believing he was meeting a woman for a first date. Once inside the garage he was brutally attacked by a masked man who prodded Tetreault with a stun baton. Barely conscious and aching from the electric shocks, Tetreault managed to run away from his attacker. Once in safety, though pained and slightly embarrassed, he didn’t want to tell the police, or anyone, about his horrific encounter. That is, until Gilles Tetreault learned of the disappearance of Johnny Altinger. Just like Tetreault, Altinger had met who he believed was a woman on PlentyofFish.com and planned to meet her. He told his friends about the plans, and then never came home.

In the meantime, Mark Twitchell was working on his opus, called “SK Confessions” (the SK standing for, of course, serial killer). All written in the first person, this spine-tingling document saved to Twitchell’s computer was a moment-by-moment account of not only the attack on Gilles Tetreault but of the murder and subsequent dismemberment of Johnny Altinger’s body. It was clear that the budding filmmaker was not
