Kriston had halted his men well before sundown and ordered camp. They were settled well prior to the evening meal at the very edge of the small road leading into the Deepen Forest.

By then, he was so exhausted that once the meal had been consumed and his tent set up, he only wanted his cot. But he had responsibilities, and one of those was to inform his men of his previous night’s adventures.

The hardest part was keeping the sergeant’s men from knowing. He spoke with his own men privately and asked Timmons to be near the tent opening so he could keep an eye out for any eavesdroppers.

“What have you found out from the sergeant or his men?” Kriston asked Brigdon first as he settled his long-tired body on his cot.

“Nothing,” the weapons teacher said as he lit a pipe. “What I have found out is only through observations.”

“Tell us.”

“The sergeant is not respected by these men, nor does he care as long as they fill out his orders. He is not patient and isn’t skilled with either weapons or military science. I do not think he knows much about this trip other than what pertains to the spy. It is my belief that Beal and Ali know nothing about the nature of the trip at all. They have been given only one order, to cause us trouble and report everything to the sergeant.” Brigdon sucked on his pipe for a moment and thought. When he continued, a small smile graced his lips. “When we met up with Beal and Bren after the lost water horse was located, the huge oaf had the nerve to demand we fire Bren for insubordination.” Here, a chuckle escaped his lips as he turned to look down at Kriston, who was trying hard to stay awake. “It was then that Ray explained to him that Bren was a higher-ranking officer than him. The man tried to tell him all secret guards were to be obeyed and that he would see that Bren was discharged when we returned home.”

Kriston heard a laugh and turned to Jake, who explained what Bren had told him of his adventure with the giant man named Beal. “Turns out Beal has no knowledge of tracking, so Bren took point in their adventure. When they came to a small path leading away from the marshes and heading into the plains, the man tried to tell Bren that he had gotten them lost and they should just continue the road to the falls. Bren continued to track the mare through the brush and when he was only about a hundred paces through the thicket, he heard Beal scream like a girl. He turned back to check on the man and do you know what the oaf said? He said a tree tried to eat him.” Jake chuckled, but then turned sober. “Bren said the man tried to strong-arm him after that. He said Beal tried to wrestle him off his horse and leave him for dead.
