Chapter 21

‘I guess our suspicions were correct.’

Archie sounded a little despondent that they’d actually been right. Sitting in the Studebaker with Daphne, gazing across the snow-covered very commercial street to the warehouse building that was apparently Kirsten Gerhard’s home address, there wasn’t a lot to tell them they’d been wrong.

‘I knew this street was all commercial,’ Archie reinforced his own dejection.

‘There doesn’t seem to be a lot going on,’ said Daphne.

Archie checked the address on the piece of paper in his hand. ‘You sure you wrote it down right?’

She gave him the stare, answering his question without words. ‘It looks deserted.’

‘Warehouses often do, especially at this time of year. We should check anyway… you never know.’

‘Really? It’s freezing.’

Archie shook his head. ‘Drive over into the space between the buildings. Then at least you won’t have to freeze your extremities off so much.’

She gave him a sarcastic look, but did as he said anyway. As they pulled into the narrow space, Archie noticed something. ‘There’s no tire tracks in the snow. Not a sign of one.’

‘I suppose you’re right again, genius.’

‘Let’s nose around anyway.’

‘How did I know you were going to say that?’

‘Aw, don’t be such a wimp, boss. It’s not snowing right now.’

‘No. It’s too damn cold for that.’
