What do you think of this? Do you think it’s just fine words? It was not actually written during the period of the Heike War, * but Noh plays were generally composed from around the middle of the Ashikaga period. Even though this battle scene, which tells of Genta in the middle of a sword fight is not from this period, the writer would have been familiar with these situations. First, the eight riders. These are eight mounted warriors of the Heike clan. Genta has as allies three retainers, making a total of four men. So “in the middle of eight riders” means the four of them were surrounded by eight men. You should realize that is because this battleground was a flat area of open fields. They would be positioned as in the diagrams. These should stir the interest of swordsmen. What do you make of them?
