Chapter 33
There was an actual candy store within the Vast Crossroads, full of fae confections that caused explosions in one mouth and the taste of full dinners to dance across oneâs tongue. This was where Cynthia stopped first, to load up on some sweet treats that were called Lilac Lollies.
âNever eat fae candy,â she had murmured as I sampled the free wares from the jars full of multicolored confections. âYouâll never lose the taste for it.â
This advice had come too late but I disregarded it all the same. These things were delicious, I bought quite a few to share with Gale.
Once we had finished treating ourselves to those hard-earned treats, we spent the rest of our time in the metaphorical candy store of the alchemist, a place full of ingredients of every kind. With access to anything and everything, I was finally able to plan a comprehensive menu for The Harbour.
The cost of ingredients was rather prohibitive. Making a single Vat of Major Healing Potion would cost us 7,000 in gold. That would be 32 doses, or bottles, able to be sold. That meant weâd need to sell them for at least 220 gold each in order to make our money back.
The Gouge Guide, our beloved manual on prices in Kensington, indicated that in the city Major Healing Potions would sell for anywhere between 500 to 800 gold per piece. People isolated in a dungeon would easily pay triple thatâ¦and yet, that didnât seem terribly fair. If I priced out people from these potions, theyâd lose their lives. Then again, if I went too low, someone would just snag them all up. Hmmm.
Fuck it, I was not running a charity. If someoneâs dying on our doorstep they could get a free bottle but otherwise, theyâre paying a premium for a health potion on demand. If we priced them at 1,000 gold eachâ¦damn that would be enough to pay Borlis his investment back. In one batch!
I wish I could have spent more time getting other types of potions ready to go, but one Vat was all we could afford for now. As long as it sold out, however, weâd be perfectly fine to start not only the next Vat but perhaps even branch into a new potion type. I suppose weâd have to take it slow.
Three months the Hard Frost sat atop the mountain. Three miserable, cold months that I was able to skip entirely as I worked in the snug, warm underground of the Giantskarl Dungeon.
The Harbour had really turned into a major project over the weeks. At first I had just envisioned a small shack with a few shelves and a bored attendant to collect coin. But now that Cynthia and I had found a steady source of ingredients within the mountain, there was a stronger push to make more of a traditional alchemist storefront.
There was plenty of construction material and the Haulers were more than happy to put their former military engineering to use working to make the modifications that Cynthia needed as we renovated the store.
