“Happy Thanksgiving, my darlings!” Betty cried, opening the door wide for Adina, who had shuffled Mrs. Porter, Betty’s elderly neighbor, across the front lawn and up the porch stairs. They stepped inside, and Betty helped Mrs. Porter pull off her coat and unpin her hat.
“It’s lovely of you to have us, Betty,” Adina said as Jacob stepped up behind her, coming from the sitting room, where he’d just been pouring himself a gin. “Oh! Jake, I didn’t realise you were here.” Adina blushed as he helped her remove her coat and hung it on a hook.
Jacob grinned. “When Betty mentioned you were coming for dinner I could hardly refuse, could I? Ima was furious that I cancelled on her, but as soon as I mentioned I’d be visiting you in protective custody, she ceased all complaints and made me swing by to pick up an apple pie.”
Adina laughed. “Well it was nice to be invited.”
“Don’t be silly,” Betty said, shooting Jacob a knowing side-glance. “To be honest, you’ve become such a fixture in our lives, I’ll be bereft when this court case ends and you’re finally set free. I think the children prefer you over me, half the time. Especially Nancy, who’s got it in her mind that I’m the worst mother in the world. Jacob – did I tell you she’s been in trouble at school?” Betty had already filled him in on the Runaway Turkey incident. She was at a loss as to how to punish Nancy for this second misuse of her powers in a single week.
Jacob shook his head but didn’t reply.
“Perhaps you should spend some time with her this evening, get to know her a little,” Betty said, with an air of casual suggestion. “With George away, a man’s calming influence might be what she needs.”
“I’ll do my best,” Jacob said, a little awkwardly.
“Wonderful!” Betty exclaimed. “Well, I’m just about ready. Why don’t you settle in the sitting room with a drink and I’ll call for the children?” Betty dashed off to the kitchen. A few minutes later she called them all in. Adina seated Mrs. Porter in the middle chair, owing to the old woman’s inability to hear any conversation that wasn’t directly in her ear.
The table was laid with a sumptuous offering of potato bread, green beans, sweet potato pie, braised carrots and roasted onions, pumpkin challah, turnips, Idaho potatoes and peas, Brussel sprouts and Ima’s large apple pie.
“It’s all kosher,” Betty assured Adina as she sat down with a slightly worried look on her face. “Jacob directed me to the appropriate local market stalls for all the ingredients.”
“I asked Ima where to go,” Jacob admitted.
Adina laughed. “Of course you did.”
“Where’s the turkey?” Mrs Porter asked, perplexed.
“Well, you know it’s the most peculiar thing,” Betty said, turning to her. “We went to the smallholding yesterday to fetch a turkey, and there was an odd disturbance while we were there. I’m not entirely sure how it happened,” Betty shot a significant look at Nancy,
