Chapter Twelve
Mia watched Kirby walk back into his classroom, feeling like sheâd stepped on his foot or knocked all the books off his desk, or done something small and petty that she should feel ashamed for. Logically, she knew she hadnât done anything. Well, anything other than show up at his workplace first thing in the morning with her ex-boyfriend in tow. And there was something about having a couple of middle school girls giggling at her before Kirby had a chance to shoo them into the classroom that took Mia right back to the place where she felt like she was one of them.
âWhat a tool,â Luke said, just as she was sinking into the worst of her feelings of guilt. He walked past her, grabbing the sleeve of her coat to prompt her to come with him.
âExcuse me?â Mia snapped. She shook out of his grip and picked up her pace, extra Annie poster tucked under her arm, so she didnât feel like she was following Luke wherever he wanted to go.
âReal subtle of him.â Luke tossed a resentful look over his shoulder. âBringing up his parents and bragging that you met them.â
âHe wasnât bragging about anything,â Mia said, pausing at the end of the hall to hang the last poster on the announcement board there. The school had given them permission to put up a few posters to get the kids excited, but they hadnât been keen on the idea of two non-school personnel people wandering the halls for long. âI met his parents because I was at Kirbyâs house for supper last night and they showed up early.â
âYeah, I bet,â Luke grumbled. They walked on, heading for the exit and nodding to the secretary in her office as they left. âIf you ask me, he probably staged the whole thing.â
Mia let out a disbelieving laugh and shook her head. âIf you believe that, itâs only because you havenât met his parents.â She paused as they reached Lukeâs car and got in. Once she was settled and Luke started the car, she went on with, âActually, youâd probably love his parents. Theyâre just your type.â
âOh?â Luke asked, seemingly genuinely interested. âHow so?â
Mia set him a flat, sideways look. âTheyâre meddling, entitled WASPs.â
Luke returned her look with a sideways one. âThanks, Mia. Thanks.â
âIs there a part of that description that you donât identify with, Mr. Main Line lawyer wannabe?â Mia fired back.
To her surprise, instead of making another snarky comment, Luke took a deep breath and seemed to marshal his thoughts before saying, âIâm really sad that you see me that way.â
Mia blinked. A twist of unease wormed its way through her that wasnât all that different from the guilt she felt about showing up at Kirbyâs workplace with Luke. Asshole Luke she could handle. Nice guy Luke made her question everything she thought she knew, especially how she felt about him.
At the same time, she could hear Miloâs voiceâand Saraâs voiceâin her head screaming at her not to fall for Lukeâs old tricks.
