You already own all the sustenance you seek.
If only youâd wake up and take a peek.
By repeatedly returning to my Sourceâthrough learning, reading, writing, teaching, walking, praying, breathing, and browser-tab closingâIâve quit wanting so much. Itâs taken a while and I still need constant reminders, but I now recognize that the sustenance I seek already rests within me: that refilling my creative well relies far more on fresh perspective than on fresh discovery.
The result, among others: I can write again. I am no longer stuck or sinking; I am thinking, feeling, and typing. And though not immune to distraction by any stretch, Iâm more conscious and cautious of it now. As a consequence, most every day for more than a year now, I do what used to seem unthinkable: I come to my desk and write. Instead of seeking or waiting for inspiration, I commit to minimizing distraction. I start a timer; I set my phone to airplane mode; I banish Facebook and Twitter; I do my best.
Still, I sometimes get distracted by the Putins and Pottery Barns of the world. And you may be thinking: Does it even matter? Are Putin and Pottery Barn really the ones preventing you from doing what youâre supposed to be doing? Are they the ones standing in the way of the important internal work that will bring you closer to where you are meant to be? Are they responsible for keeping you from creating and connecting to that sacred space within?
Though neither personally nor exclusively: yes, yes, yes, and YES! Those five tabs may seem like minor intrusions, but they represent all of the small impositions on our attention that combine to create a cavernous rift between us and our unique yet universal purpose on this planet.
We all seek spiritual connection, even if we donât label it as such. Some of us do it through words, while others do it through family or food, music or dance, scalpels or paintbrushes, microscopes or telescopes. The means and obstacles along the way vary from person to person, but the end remains the same. We are all here to get past petty distractions and go for the gold: the real gold, the inner gold, the gold that doesnât cost a cent, the gold we already own, the gold that facilitates connection. And while our paths may differ dramatically en route to this most precious spiritual metal, its source remains identical, eternal, and unmistakable: Love.
