Janey watched from the store window as Lindsay hurried up the sidewalk toward the door. She’d learned a lot from her new friend over the past few weeks, like how to make a wreath using burlap, wire, and cut-up strips of Will’s old jeans. Or that empty wine bottles could be used to keep the shape of her boots when she wasn’t wearing them. Or if she put a dryer sheet in a soaking pan after Regan cooked, it would bring the burned crud right off of there.

And most importantly, if she wanted Lindsay Shepherd to be on time for anything, she had to tell her to arrive a half hour before the start time.

“I am so sorry I’m late,” Lindsay said, the door falling shut behind her.

Janey smiled. “What was it today? Backup on the interstate?”

“Ha ha! You’re funny.” Lindsay tossed her car keys into her purse. “Actually, Will was at the house fixing my fence when I got home from work. I didn’t feel right leaving.”

“Oh,” Janey responded, and quickly turned to glance through a rack of dresses before Lindsay could see the irritation on her face. Janey wasn’t the only one spending a lot of time with Lindsay these days. It was like that time she’d gotten her first Barbie doll and knew it was a matter of time before Will would cut the doll’s hair off, mark war paint over its face, and enlist it with his G.I. Joes.

Lindsay was the only treasure Janey had that her brother hadn’t tarnished.

“Not because I don’t trust him there alone or anything,” Lindsay said, backpedaling. “Just because it’s hot and . . . well, what if something happened to him?”

“Oh, I get it. No need to explain.” Janey took a deep, calming breath and turned back around. “Well, let’s find you a dress for the mayor’s dinner, Principal Shepherd.”

They set off down the aisle, side by side, in search of the perfect dress to meet Lindsay’s list of qualifications. It couldn’t be too formal, too casual, or too business-y. Nothing that accentuated her waist, because apparently Lindsay’d put on fifteen pounds since her divorce, though Janey thought she looked perfect. And it had to fall just right on her leg—too high and her thighs looked huge, too low and her calves did. By the time Lindsay had narrowed the options to three, Janey had reaffirmed why she hated to shop.

“Oh my God.” Lindsay huffed behind the dressing room door. “I’m a giant rubber duck.”

“I’m sure it’s not that bad,” Janey said, praying she was right. She couldn’t do another day of this. “Let me see.”

Lindsay pushed the door open, all yellow chiffon, lace, and bows, and squeezed herself and the god-awful dress into the mirrored area. “Isn’t it lovely?”

Janey tried to contain her laughter, but how could she not laugh at a giant rubber duck? “Well, just pick one of the others.”

“Did you not see the others?” Lindsay pushed the dressing room door open. “The pink one made me look like a baby pig.
