Chapter 23 - Bastian

Bastian twisted his key and pushed the door open. He was greeted by darkness, just like he was every evening. He lit a candle and let his room flicker to life. Yesterday had been great. Picturing Oriana pacing back and forth in the spot he had promised to meet her put a smile on his face. She had waited for quite a while before giving up. And she looked just as cute when she scowled as when she smiled. If only his evening could have been as good.

Finding a buyer for the golden gauntlet had proved more difficult than Bastian had anticipated. He'd spent all night going from fence to fence, but they all gave him the same answer. Selling stolen trinkets and jewelry was relatively safe. But selling stolen armor? That was a great way to have an angry knight take your head off. At least, that was what the fences had all told him.

He sat down and stared at the vials of scorpium on the wooden table. He'd managed to scrape together enough drachmas for the scorpium. But guilt started to creep into his mind as he waited for Logan. He knew Logan would be desperate for a fix. When he had seen him yesterday, he was scratching his arms and mumbling nonsense. He was in withdrawal. If he hadn't found any by now, he'd probably give up a limb for a single dose. Bastian had hoped it wouldn't come to this, but it was the only way he could think to pay Logan for his half of the necklace. It would have to be enough.

Besides, one day, he'd be out of these tunnels. He'd get Logan clean and take him with him. Maybe he'd even have Oriana. Just the thought of her smiling up at him put his mind at ease. She liked him too, despite what Logan thought. He had a real shot with her.

Nut scampered through the small hole in the door and hopped onto Bastian's lap. The squirrel immediately spit an acorn onto the front of Bastian's trousers and looked up at him expectantly.

Bastian patted Nut's head and grabbed the acorn. Bringing him food was Nut's way of showing his loyalty. Or maybe Nut was trying to take care of him. Bastian patted the squirrel's head again. What Nut didn't realize was that Bastian eating raw acorns would make him sicker than Logan's horrible withdrawal symptoms.

When there was a knock on the door, Bastian took advantage of Nut's distraction and slid the acorn into his pocket. "Come in," he said. He loved his squirrel, but he didn't want to spend the night hunched over the privy. His fingers wound around the key in his pocket. He was going to visit Oriana. He just hoped it was the key to her bedchamber and not the kitchen pantry. Although, a warm meal wouldn't be the worst thing. Bastian had used all his money to purchase the scorpium for Logan. The apple he'd swiped for lunch was all he'd eaten all day.
