Chapter Seven

Jackson could hear Zal flopping around in his bed. He obviously couldn’t sleep, and that meant Jackson couldn’t sleep because Zal was making too much noise.

Jackson sighed and got up, shaking his fur out. He padded to the bed and placed his jaw next to Zal’s pillow. When Zal rolled around, he jerked back.

“The fuck, man?”

Jackson rolled his eyes and whined.

Zal sighed. “Am I keeping you up? Sorry. I just can’t sleep.”

That much had been obvious. Jackson whined again, wondering if Zal would understand he was asking him if he wanted to talk. Probably not, but Jackson wasn’t sure shifting back to his human form would be a good idea since he’d be naked and Zal would be in bed. So much temptation. He was only human. Well, mostly.

Zal reached for Jackson’s head but stopped before actually touching him. “Can I?”

Jackson bumped his nose against Zal’s hand, hoping for a head-rub. Zal chuckled and gave him just that, scratching just above Jackson’s eyes. Jackson closed his eyes. It had been so long since he’d last been scratched in his wolf form—or in his human form. But his dad had been the last person who’d petted him in his wolf form, and it had been a few years. Jackson hadn’t realized how much he missed it until now.

“You’re really just a big puppy, aren’t you?” Zal asked, and Jackson wasn’t even offended, not when it came from Zal. He’d gladly admit it if it meant more scratches for him.

Still, it wasn’t the reason why Jackson had come to Zal in the first place, so he enjoyed them for only a few more minutes before bumping his nose against Zal’s cheek.

“Hey, that’s cold,” Zal protested. “And wet.”

Jackson did it again, just because he could. It made Zal laugh, so it was good. Hopefully, he’d laugh more once he’d talked about whatever was on his mind. It could be so many things that Jackson wouldn’t know where to being if he were in Zal’s place.

Zal rolled onto his back and looked at the canopy of the four-poster bed. They’d be staying at the palace for a few days, or at least Jackson hoped it would be only a few days. Zal had been given a room, but when the queen had tried to give Jackson his own room on the other side of the palace, Jackson had decided he’d sleep in Zal’s room, just in case. He remembered all too well that a fey was still after Zal, even though the queen didn't seem worried. She didn't have to know where Jackson really slept. Besides, he didn't really care if she did find out he was sleeping in Zal’s room.

The queen obviously didn't like Jackson. He didn't know if it was because of what he was or because he was in Zal’s corner when it came to what he’d do in the future, and he didn't care. He didn't really like the queen all that much either.

So when Zal had gone to bed, Jackson had followed.
